Golden - A Balance Bike Day Out

Golden - A Balance Bike Day Out

April 9, 2026Trail Notes

Golden gets talked about as a big-mountain town — steep terrain, serious enduro, gnarly descents. All true. But it's also quietly great for the other end of the spectrum: kids on balance bikes who are absolutely convinced they're the fastest person alive.

Here's a half-day itinerary that works for that crowd.

The Itinerary

Stop 1 — Pump Track

Start here. For balance bike kids, a pump track is ideal: smooth rollers, a looping surface, and enough speed to feel real without real consequence.

A few things to know before you go:

  • Best time: Weekday mornings are quietest. Weekends bring older kids and teenagers — not dangerous, but chaotic for very young riders.
  • Surface: Well-maintained and smooth. Most balance bikes handle it fine. Skip it if it's been raining.
  • No shade: Bring sunscreen. Even though there is shade, it tends to get hot on those summer days
  • No fence: Keep an eye on small ones near the edges.
  • Bonus: The skate park is right next to it and there is a public washroom (at the Recreation Centre)!

Budget at least an hour. The kids won't tire of it: you might!

Stop 2 — Alexander Park Elementary Playground

Right across the street from the pump track. It's a proper playground — worth the stop when someone needs a break from the track. It also lets you split the group: one adult stays with a tired toddler while the other keeps going with an older sibling.

Stop 3 — Rotary Trail (Kicking Horse River)

Once everyone's had a snack, the Rotary Trail is a two-minute roll from the pump track — so no loading up the car. The path runs along the Kicking Horse River beside the campground: flat, mostly shaded by cottonwoods, and calm enough that small riders can set their own pace without traffic or distractions.

  • Flat and paved — balance bikes, small pedal bikes, and ride-along trailers all work fine
  • The tree cover makes a real difference on a warm day
  • Easy to turn around whenever the group is done — no commitment to a set distance

Distance tip: The stretch along the river is short enough that even very young riders can do it twice. Let them lead.

Stop 4 — Ice Cream at Kicking Horse Movies

Yes, it's a movie theatre. It also serves some of the best ice cream in Golden, and ending here has become something of a local ritual for this kind of outing. Central, kid-friendly, worth it.

Practical Notes

  • Total time: 3–4 hours including all stops and the inevitable slowdowns
  • Parking: Easiest near the pump track; the Rotary Trail is rideable from there
  • Pack: Helmet, sunscreen, snacks, water, a change of clothes
  • Age range: Best for roughly 18 months to 5 years. Older kids will want more — add distance on the Rotary Trail or save a bigger ride for a separate day

Why Golden Works for This

Golden doesn't usually come up in family MTB conversations — it gets filed under "advanced riding" and left there. But the pieces for a low-key family day are all close together: a quality pump track, a river trail, a playground, and an ice cream stop within a few hundred metres of each other. That's not common.

If you're passing through on a Kootenays road trip, it's an easy half-day stop. If you're local, it's your default Tuesday morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. While Golden has a reputation for advanced riding, the town centre has everything a young family needs within a few hundred metres: a quality pump track, a flat paved river trail, a playground, and an ice cream stop. The pump track has smooth rollers well-suited to balance bikes, and the Rotary Trail along the Kicking Horse River is flat and shaded. It works as a half-day stop on a Kootenays road trip or a regular local outing for kids roughly 18 months to 5 years old.

Weekday mornings are the quietest. Weekends bring older kids and teenagers — not dangerous, but more chaotic for very small riders. The pump track gets hot on summer days despite some shade, so bring sunscreen and water. There's no fence around the edges, so stay close to the youngest riders. The public washroom at the Recreation Centre is right there, which helps.

Budget 3–4 hours including all stops. Start with at least an hour at the pump track, then roll over to Alexander Park playground across the street for a break. The Rotary Trail along the Kicking Horse River is a two-minute ride from the pump track — flat, shaded, and easy to turn around whenever the group is done. Finish at Kicking Horse Movies for ice cream. All stops are close enough together that there's no need to load up the car between them.
