Skill Levels

What Level is your Child?

If you are still unsure of your child's level, please reach out to coach@trailrippers.ca. We’d be happy to assist!

Beginner

Beginner

  • Pedal comfortably on smooth surfaces such as grass fields or flat gravel paths (e.g., Rotary Trail around town)
  • Coast while seated with feet on pedals, maintaining basic balance
  • Start and stop safely, though they may favour one brake or put a foot down when unsure
  • Ride mostly straight lines, often looking down toward their front wheel
  • Attempt to shift gears but typically stay in one gear, making small hills feel harder than they need to be
  • Prefer to walk uneven, bumpy, or slightly hilly terrain

Goal

Build foundational mountain bike skills on flat terrain, such as improving balance, braking, trail awareness, and experimenting with gears in a low-pressure, fun environment.

Experienced Beginner

Experienced Beginner

  • Ride confidently on easy green trails with gentle corners and small rolling hills, such as Bush Party
  • Stand up on level pedals while coasting on easier terrain
  • Start and stop safely using both brakes most of the time
  • Shift gears independently, but may struggle to consistently choose the right gear for climbs and descents (sometimes causing spinning or grinding)
  • May be attempting to ride easier blue trails like Premature or Berminator, though they may walk steeper sections or tighter corners
  • Find short punchy climbs or trails with frequent roots and rocks challenging

Goal

Continue to build on foundational skills like stability and balance, improve gear choice and braking control, and develop confidence on more varied terrain while keeping the experience safe and fun. It certainly helps if they’ve already taken the beginner program but it’s not mandatory!

Intermediate

Intermediate

  • Stand up on level pedals while descending all green and most blue trails with growing consistency and control
  • Start and stop confidently using both brakes, and are ready to refine braking technique for better flow and trail awareness
  • Navigate corners with increasing confidence and are working toward smoother, more controlled turns
  • Maintain stability on steeper terrain while managing speed appropriately
  • Shift gears effectively across varied terrain, though sustained or steeper climbs may still be challenging
  • Ride comfortably over roots, rocks, and small trail features

Goal

Build flow, stability, and confidence on intermediate terrain while refining braking habits, cornering technique, and efficient gear use for a wide range of trail conditions.
