A Spring Day at Swansea
Klaus and I headed out to Swansea, just outside Invermere, on a sunny mid-April day. It was our first time riding in the area, and the trails delivered. The trails were dry and tacky — the kind of conditions you hope for but don't always get this early in the season. We hit three trails: Hula Girl, Beyond Beef, and Meatgrinder. Our mission was to scope out some trails that we can ride as a family.
Here's what you need to know if you're thinking of bringing the family.
The Trailhead
The trailhead setup at Swansea is really great — parking, washrooms, and even a tool station, which I always appreciate. Fair warning, though, I can imagine that this lot fills up fast in peak season, so if you're planning a summer trip, go early. Honestly, early is better anyway — cooler temperatures mean happier kids.
When we showed up, we had our pick of spots and finding the trailhead was easy.
Hula Girl — Worth the Climb, Not for the Youngest Kids
I’m not going to lie, getting to Hula Girl is a workout. The climb is steep in sections, and honestly, kids under 10 are going to struggle with their bitty wheels. If your crew isn't confident climbing technical terrain on their own, plan accordingly — this isn't a casual spin-up.
The trail itself? Worth it. Hula Girl is a fun, flowy blue with a handful of rollers and short techy sections mixed in. It keeps things interesting and fun without tipping into scary. A solid intermediate rider will have a blast, and a motivated 10+ year-old who's been putting in trail time should handle it fine.
Beyond Beef — The Family Favourite
Beyond Beef is a different story. The road climb up to it is easy and mellow — totally doable for young riders. We watched a family tow their kids up for multiple laps while we were there. That tells you everything.
This trail is great for young riders. We're talking 6 and 7-year-olds on 20-inch wheels. It's flowy, confidence-building, and the kind of trail that gets kids asking for one more lap. If you're introducing your family to Swansea, start here. Your kids will love it and so will you.
Meatgrinder
Meatgrinder rounds out the day nicely. It's a short, black trail that adds a bit more bite and technical riding to the mix. It will test your skills without going full send. It’s a good option once your young rider has had their fill on Beyond Beef and they want to push it a bit more. Both Beyond Beef and Meatgrinder end at the parking lot.
April Conditions
Trails were dry and tacky on our visit. April can be hit or miss in the Kootenays, but if you get a run of dry weather, Swansea is ready early. Worth checking recent ride reports on Trailforks before you load up the truck.
The Quick Take
- Hula Girl: fun flowy blue, challenging climb — best for riders 10+ or confident climbers
- Beyond Beef: easy road approach, great for young kids, including 6/7-year-olds on 20" wheels. Easy to lap.
- Meatgrinder: adds spice to the day, pairs well with the above
- Trailhead: parking, washrooms, tool station, picnic benches
Swansea is definitely going on our Invermere list — and honestly, we're already talking about going back. If you're heading there with kids at different skill levels, it just works. Everyone gets to ride at their own pace without anyone feeling left behind or in over their head. And the trailhead has bathrooms, which — if you've ever tried to get a group of kids ready to ride — you know is a bigger deal than it sounds. It just makes showing up so much easier.
See you on the trails.
